I’ve said before that I appreciate new ideas when it comes to fashion and especially handbags… but when I said that, I’m certain that the design of the Robert Canvas Tote by Marc Jacobs wasn’t what I meant.  Frankly I just don’t get it.  One bag?  Two bags?  Who can tell?  I’m left completely confused.

Let’s look at it: To begin with it’s a canvas tote in saffron, with leather trim and gold-tone hardware at the top.  It has a very cute turnlock closure to keep it cinched at the top along with some square studs at the sides for a little style.  So far so good in my opinion…

But then that’s where it gets a little weird.  There’s a whole saffron leather quilted clutch stuck to the front!  Huh?  MJ has totally lost me here.  Tote or clutch?  Is it that hard to make a decision that he needed to include both?  And as if that wasn’t bizarre enough, the closure on the clutch is two gold-tone FROGS!  How many odd details can one bag support?

I guess that this clutch “detail” can be basically a glorified pocket.  It would certainly be an easy place to put a cell phone or anything else you might need easily accessible.  (I’m really trying to find some meaning in this design.)

What do you think of this “abstract” design?  I’d love to hear from someone who likes it and find out exactly what it is that makes it appealing.

I have to admit that I have not always been totally enamored with Vera Bradley’s bright floral and paisley patterns.  Don’t get me wrong, I love the femininity of the colors and styles, but I just haven’t always thought that the bright quilted bags are as versatile as other choices out there.

That being said, Vera Bradley has won me over completely with the new Limited Edition Nylon Collection for Spring.  It fits in seemlessly with the signature VB style, but I think that it’s one of the most versatile and complete collections I’ve seen from the brand.

Including a tote, a clutch and multiple shoulder bags, there seems to be a style to suit any need.  The same is true of the color choices that include black (for the most versatile and understated look) as well as a bright pink and green (for a fun punch of color in the spring and summer).

My two favorites in the collection are the the Carlyle bag (above) and the Whitney handbag (below).  Both have the circular quilted pattern which is true to VB style (although I have to say it’s even one of the chicest quilted patterns from Vera Bradley).  It’s the other details of this collection that make it different from the VB norm - the patent leather at the edges and the silver accents of the circles and grommets.

The Carlyle bags is certainly a great option for day or evening and is able to be dressed up or down. The simple silhouette is enhanced with the silver and patent trimmings. The Whitney is for the woman who needs a bit more space in her bag, but the effect is the same: a chic quilted bag that can be used for mostly any occasion.

Both bags share an element that has made Vera Bradley a favorite of women who appreciate organization - many pockets!  I must say that this is a huge selling point for me, as I find myself searching and searching through a large tote or oversized bag wondering why more pockets were not included in the design.

And the best part about boths bags (and the others in the Nylon Collection) is that they are affordable - from $95 down to $22 for a card & key case!
